Cinnamon Apple French Toast Bake

Is there anything better than perfectly spiced cinnamon apple french toast smothered in maple syrup? I think not. This rich, custardy french toast is loaded up with all the cozy, spiced, apple-y flavors of fall. Made with layers of brioche french toast, thinly sliced apples, crunchy nuts, and a healthy dose of maple syrup, this french toast bake is the perfect way to start the day.

What is a french toast bake?

I LOVE french toast, but it can be little time consuming to make. Dipping each individual piece, pan frying it to perfection…the timing can be really tricky if you’re feeding a crowd. I always feel like someone is always left with cold slice. And why settle for cold french toast, when you can bake it all up at once. Everyone gets a perfectly cooked, hot out of the oven slice of french toast and it’s also WAY less work. A french toast bake is made in just the same way you’d make regular french toast, except after soaking the slices you’ll place them all into a buttered pan and bake them up. No messy frying pans or sticky fingers.

Sold? I thought so.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf challah or brioche
  • 4 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 medium apples, sliced thin
  • 1/2 cup almonds, roughly chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a standard-sized loaf pan with parchment paper. Set aside.
  2. Cut bread into one inch thick slices. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, maple syrup, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt. Soak all of your slices of bread in the egg mixture for 5 minutes.
  4. Meanwhile, slice your apples horizontally into thin rings. Use a corer or a metal frosting tip to core the apple core from the slices.
  5. Layer in your soaked bread slices and apples, alternating one slice of bread to 3 slices of apples. If once you’re done you have any egg mixture left over, pour it over the entire loaf. Sprinkle with chopped almonds and cover loosely with tin foil.
  6. Bake for 45-50 minutes, removing the tin foil after 30 minutes. Allow to cool for 10 minutes before sprinkling with powdered sugar!
  7. To serve, use a bread knife to cut slices from the loaf. Drizzle with maple syrup!
